Transport OperatorsIn Northern Ireland, the Department of the Environment is responsible for regulation of the road transport industry.
Within the Core Department, two Branches - Driver, Vehicle and Operator Policy Branch and Road Transport Legislation Branch - deal with road transport issues through new policy and legislation monitoring and development.
The Department, through DVLNI, is responsible, under the Transport Act (NI) 1967, for the licensing of operators (and their vehicles) who carry other people's goods by road for reward. DVTA, on behalf of the Department, takes the lead in vehicle testing and driver and vehicle enforcement.
These pages are designed to give transport operators, consumer representative bodies and those involved at industry level, useful information on the policies that are being developed and introduced by Driver, Vehicle and Operator Policy Branch.
