FAQ About Taxis
![]() Green Taxis fitted with green plates are licensed as private hire. They may only accept pre-booked work. Their licence prevents them from being hailed in the street or working from a rank.
![]() Yellow Yellow plates are issued to Belfast Public Hire taxis. These must be accessible vehicles and work to fares regulated by the Department. Under the 1951 Belfast By-Laws, they are the only taxis that can be hailed in the street and work from ranks within a five-mile radius of Belfast city centre.
![]() White Vehicles fitted with white plates are licensed as Restricted Public Hire. They are known also as 'Public Hire Outside Belfast'. These taxis are licensed to accept pre-booked journeys throughout Northern Ireland and to be hailed in the street and work from ranks outside of the five-mile limit of Belfast city centre.
![]() White/Blue These plates are issued to taxibuses, such as those which operate in parts of West Belfast, charging separate fares on services provided along pre-set routes
Answer 2 - The Northern Ireland Review of Taxi Regulation - the Taxi Review - was launched in November 2002. Its objective was to make recommendations aimed at creating a more effective and equitable regulatory framework, which promotes road and personal safety, improves accessibility and facilitates fair competition in the taxi industry.
