Halon Gas Fire Extinguisher

Currently Halon is deemed as an acceptable content for a fire extinguisher in two sets of Northern Ireland motor vehicle related regulations:
  • Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1999 – Schedule 7 – Fire Extinguishing Apparatus and First Aid Equipment for Minibuses.
  • Public Service Vehicles (Conditions of Fitness, Equipment and Use) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1995 – Schedule 4 – Fire Extinguishing Apparatus.
Both Schedules refer to the acceptable contents of fire extinguishing apparatus in their paragraph (b) thus:
(b) contains water or foam or contains, and is marked to indicate that it contains halon 1211 or halon 1301.
To comply with EC Regulation 2037/2000, it is our intention to remove the references to acceptability of halon 1211 and 1301. Thereby having the schedules amended in their paragraph (b) thus:
(b) contains water or foam.
