The Road Safety Teaching Aid Calendars are for the school year September - June (term-time only). The calendars have been designed and produced to help you teach an important road safety lesson to your class throughout the school year. The messages are as simple as possible for the children but we rely very much on you to expand the message to suit local circumstances and fully explain the road safety points.
The Department of the Environment Road Safety Education Officer Service appreciates the valuable road safety education carried out by teachers.
Road Safety fits into many parts of the Curriculum: and suggested links are provided on each calendar page, for example:
The photographs in the calendars are taken in different parts of Northern Ireland using primary school children in real-life traffic situations. Every attempt is made to select locations that can be easily identified by local children. This adds interest for the pupils.
In addition to the suggested curriculum links, the photographs can be used as a basis for further discussion and work on road safety topics eg. Maths with your teachers - Count the vehicles passing the school gate.
Skooter has been created as the Road Safety teaching character to appear in all the calendars and additional road safety teaching materials produced by the Department of the Environment Road Safety Education Officer Service.

MINISTER LAUNCHES CALENDAR FOR NEW SCHOOL YEAR

Environment Minister, Edwin Poots, recently visited Killowen Primary School, Lisburn, to launch his Department’s road safety Teaching Aid Calendar.
The calendar is a visual teaching tool distributed free of charge to every classroom in nursery and primary schools across Northern Ireland It features cartoon character Skooter, who has a road safety message for each week of the school year.
The Minister said “My Department first introduced the Teaching Aid Calendar in 1972 and since then it has become a focal point on the walls of classrooms across the province, acting as a key teaching aid for highlighting a range of roads safety messages.
“By now all nursery and primary schools will have received their calendars and I would urge teachers to make good use of the teaching notes and curriculum links contained on them which reinforce my Department’s road safety messages. By using the Teaching Aid Calendar every week, teachers will be helping children to develop the skills they need to become safe road users.”
Fiona Corry, Principal of Killowen Primary School in Lisburn said The road safety Teaching Aid Calendar is a well established resource in primary schools and assist  teachers in raising pupils’ awareness of the dangers they face on the roads. The calendars are curriculum based and each version is pitched at the right level for the age group targeted so that teachers can integrate the road safety messages into lessons.”
