Road Traffic Studies


Why teach "Road Traffic Studies"?
Our educational system aims to equip young people with:-
  1. the knowledge to pass examinations;
  2. the skills necessary to cope with every day life.
In this context one of the most important life skills is the ability to cope with road and traffic conditions.
"Road Traffic Studies"has an intrinsic role in each of these general education aims and also has the following subject specific aims:-
  1. to develop a better informed and more responsible road user;
  2. to develop an understanding of the legal liabilities of being a road user;
  3. to promote a positive and understanding attitude to the use of the road and to all road users;
  4. to develop a respect for the safety of all road users;
  5. to develop an awareness of the interaction of road user, environment and vehicle;
  6. to develop a range of manipulative and communicative skills appropriate to the subject;
  7. to encourage students to work independently and co-operatively.
The subject "Road Traffic Studies" lends itself to the widest possible varieties of teaching strategies including:-
  1. classroom instruction and discussion;
  2. visiting speakers (eg. Road Safety Education Officer);
  3. observation and investigation on-site;
  4. use of audio-visual aids;
  5. hands-on experience with moped riding skills.
"Road Traffic Studies" will therefore provide a stimulating range of teaching/learning experiences.
Road Traffic Studies has cross curricular links to varied subjects including:-
  1. Information and Communication Technology;
  2. Health Education;
  3. Economic Awareness;
  4. Cultural Heritage;
  5. Careers;
  6. Education for Mutual Understanding;
  7. Numeracy and Literacy;
The "Road Traffic Studies" teacher is provided with:-
  1. appropriate training on the provision of the course and on the use of a moped;
  2. additional funding;
  3. equipment and text books etc.;
  4. practical advice and support from the local Road Safety Education Officer;
  5. a moped on permanent loan from the Department of Environment, insured for use by pupils and trained staff within the school grounds.;
There is some flexibility in the delivery of the "Road Traffic Studies" course.
