PSHE - Personal Social and Health Education
By the time students have reached post primary school, road safety education can no longer be delivered simply as a set of rules or a code to learn. It becomes part of a much wider context, involving decision making, personal responsibility, health risk and attitudes towards safety.
Using roads safely involves:-
- a knowledge/understanding of how the road and transport system works;
- using skills related to problem solving and decision making;
- personal and social attitudes and values.
Primary School Resource
Primary School teachers can obtain a free copy of the British Institute of Traffic Education Research "Stay Sharp" booklet from the Department of Environment's Road Safety Education Officer Service.
The main objective of the resource is to integrate road safety into the general content of the Personal, Social, & Health Education curriculum, as well as other areas such as English, Science and Technology.
"Stay Sharp" is specifically designed for Year 7 children who are about to make the transition from Primary to Post Primary and covers the following themes:-
- Feeling grown up - responsibility for personal safety.
- Safe in the country? / Safe in the town? - identifying hazards.
- How safe is your journey? - assessing risks.
- Thinking about safety at school - safe and hazardous places.
Each theme is free-standing with 45 minutes being the suggested time needed to cover the topic.
Each topic has related task sheets that may be photocopied and used in class or for homework. The focus of each theme builds on the experience of the pupils and is then extended through additional stimulus material and group activities. The booklet also provides suggestions for extension work.
The booklet also offers the teacher the opportunity to utilise the experience of relevant individuals and organisations within the community, including their local Road Safety Education Officer
Although primarily a PSHE resource, the booklet provides links to include road safety in English, Mathematics, Geography, Science etc.
Post Primary School Resource
Post Primary teachers can obtain a free copy of the British Institute of Traffic Education Research "Stay Sharp" file from the Department of Environment's Road Safety Education Officer Service.
The themes in the "Stay Sharp" file targets two additional age groups.
