Partnership Between School and Road Safety Education ServiceThe delivery of road safety education by teachers in Northern Ireland schools is
greatly enhanced by a close partnership between the Road Safety Education Service and the school. Each school has a Road Safety Education Officer (RSEO) allocated to it by the Department of the Environment
and this officer will visit throughout the school year. ![]() Close
co-operation between the school and the RSEO ensures teachers are equipped with the help and resources
needed to prepare the new generation of road users with the knowledge, skills, and understanding required
to enable them to stay safe on our roads. Whilst road safety issues are fairly
common across the board, each school will have its own particular requirements depending on issues such
as location, size, pupils’ needs, subjects/programmes offered, etc. It is useful for the school to have a co-ordinator or someone responsible for liaising with the RSEO
to ensure the needs of teachers are addressed quickly and efficiently. The
statistics for road
related deaths and serious injuries in Northern Ireland speak for themselves. A lot of excellent road safety education continues to be taught in schools and colleges contributing
to the reduction in casualties. Together we can make
a difference! |
