Driver Training Scheme

The Department of Environment Road Safety Education Officer Service offers a driver training scheme to all post primary schools in Northern Ireland. The subsidised scheme provides full time students, who hold a provisional driving licence, the opportunity of taking part in a practical driver-training course. The scheme has been designed to provide young drivers with a proper attitude towards driving.
Each student pairs up with another student with a similar timetable and both complete the application form. This is submitted to the school office along with the necessary fee from each student, with the school forwarding the application form on to the appropriate Department of Environment Road Safety Education office. The Road Safety Education office then matches each pair of students with an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) who provides the training during school hours.

The scheme consists of 12 hours training on the road, made up of six hours practical driving and six hours as an observer, during which time roadcraft and the theory of driving will be taught.
