Cycling Proficiency SchemeInformation for TeachersTeachers!
Did you know that your pupils could be formally trained in how to ride a bicycle safely, learn some
rules of the road, and how to negotiate junctions, whilst still at primary school? The
Cycling Proficiency Scheme is an initiative of the Department of Environment Road Safety Education Officer
Service, sponsored by Centra. Each year thousands of primary school children in Northern Ireland receive training and are tested. ![]() The
Road Safety Education Officer Service will provide teachers with all the
training and resources necessary to allow them to run the scheme with their P6/7 pupils. In some circumstances P5’s can undertake the training but must be nine years old to be tested. Each child who is trained and reaches the required standard on the day of the test, receives a certificate
and badge in recognition of their achievement. Teachers receive payment of £8.00 per hour by forwarding a claim to the appropriate Road Safety Education
Office at the end of the scheme. Why not ask your Road Safety Education Officer
for more information on the Cycling Proficiency Scheme. To
